Oates advises young writers to read widely, takes a nostalgic glance back at childhood influences, waxes poetic on the joys of running and its relation to writing, and tackles the inner trajectories of the creative process. The essays are peppered with anecdotes concerning writers' trials, doubts and influences; these well-selected snippets form the most enjoyable and illuminating aspect of the book. If Oates's own insights don't always live up to the wit and beauty of such quoted authors as T.S. Eliot and D. H. Lawrence, it may be because she gives herself comparatively little room to wrestle with such broad concepts as inspiration and failure. Oates's suggestion that writers as a breed apart may irritate the "ordinary reader" she refers to (whom, she suggests, might not know that "no story writes itself") and may even make writers uncomfortable (to write, she says, is to "invite angry censure from those who don't write, or who don't write in quite the way you do....Art by its nature is a transgressive act, and artists must accept being punished for it"). But Oates obviously understands the faith that writing, that "juncture of private vision and the wish to create a communal, public vision" takes, and young writers especially may find words of wisdom here.

At first glance, this book's photos and illustrations, which are just as important as the text in an exercise book, seem dated and bland. But a reading of the text and a closer examination of the illustrations reveal that what makes this yoga text different and worthwhile is the author's commitment to tying yoga's spiritual aspects to its physical components. Farhi (The Breathing Book) discusses the "Ten Living Principles," or the yamas ("wise characteristics") and the niyamas ("codes for living soulfully"), and also considers the importance of the asanas ("postures") in grounding spirituality in the body. However, Farhi does far more than provide descriptions and illustrations of postures. At the beginning of each new section, she has readers move through one or two core poses. She then asks them to focus on the way they feel physically while performing the pose. Using these core poses, she moves on to postures of greater complexity while allowing for different levels of ability. One possible problem for beginners is her use of posture names to describe poses that involve movement from one posture to the next (e.g., the sun salutation or the downward dog). This book was everything & nothing like I expected. Chosen as the 1st of 10 books to read for a Yoga Teacher Training program, I expected it to have a wonderful amount of detail on Yoga's physical practice & a healthy dose of the other (rarely covered in the West) aspects of Yoga.The book certainly delivered on that, but it also took me by surprise as to the LEVEL of detail - a level that is certainly required of any book for to-be Yoga teachers, but I believe that this book could be understood by even your average practitioner.I wish I had known about this book when I first started Yoga (right around the time this book was 1st printed, ironically). Even after nearly a decade of practice, I feel as though, after reading this book, I'm practicing Yoga with a whole other level of awareness.While I can easily give the book copious amounts of praise, I was sad to see the smaller selection of actual Yoga poses, including the classic Tree Pose. Understandably, there is only so much that you can cover in one book (and this book is STUFFED with info), but I was disappointed to see many of my favorite poses (many of which are beginner-to-intermediate level) left out. I'd LOVE to see Donna Farhi write another Yoga book with more poses - possible a "Part 2" to this tome.This book stands as vital proof that Yoga is far more than "just stretching". I recommend this book to EVERY person who has thought about trying Yoga, practices Yoga, or teaches Yoga - no matter the style or type. This book will reconnect you to your practice in ways you never imagined.

I have been doing yoga for about 5 years and this book along with Eric Schiffman's have been revelatory. Donna Farhi helps make your yoga practice more personal (in terms of how to make your practice more internal rather than external), and more spiritual. She's not afraid to talk about the deeper issues of yoga. This is a complete book of Yoga in the sense that it's not just a book about how to get your body into the proper "shapes". While the asana instruction is very easy to follow and precise, it teaches you how to make the asana's come to life through "the Seven moving principles".These are things that I've not seen before in any other book. These are :1. Breathe. Let the breath move you.2. Yield. Yield to the earth.3. Radiate. Move from the inside out.4. Center. Maintain the integrity of the spine.5. Support. Whatever touches the ground becomes the foundation of support for each asana.6. Align. Alignment is the clear sequential flow of force through the body.7. Engage. Engage the whole body. These principles are real eye openers and can bring the asanas alive. She also give ideas on sequencing principle and much much more. It is by far the best book on Yoga I have seen and I've read quite a few! Namaste.
